Description of the research topic:

Indoor positioning has gained attention over the past decades. While Global Navigation Satellite Systems give a standard solution for global positioning, there is no single technology nor approach for indoor positioning tasks. The various existing indoor positioning systems are based on different technologies and use different techniques. Accuracy, cost, availability, robustness are just a few criteria of indoor positioning systems. Accurate solutions have high devel- opment, installation and maintenance cost; and may require specific hardware. So developers have to make trade-offs between accuracy and cost during the development.

Design and development of a hybrid indoor positioning method based on WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy technologies is the goal of this research project. WiFi is widely used in indoor positioning systems because it can be used for both positioning and communication purposes. Although, BLE is an emerging technology in this field, already has some promising results. The method de- veloped should be implemented as a part of the ILONA System and has to be tested across simulations and in real-life scenario.
