Description of the research topic:
Social isolation may concern several societal groups: confined small groups in institutions and elderly or health-deteriorated people. Adverse psychological effects of prolonged social isolation are reflected in verbal behavior and language use.
Our research group investigates psychological states and their changes in the diaries and communication of small groups confined in extreme environmental conditions (in terrestial space analog simulations and winteroverers on the Antarctica) by the method of multilingual computerized psychological content analysis.
Our methodology and results are extended to the investigation of further societal groups. In our empirical studies, linguistic markers of social isolation and favorable changes thereof as an impact of expressive writing (e.g. emotional and cognitive processes, time consciousness, stereotypy, coherence, resilience, etc.) are investigated in various types of self-narratives.
