Description of the research topic:

The investigation of nominalization is in the forefront of both typological and generative linguistic research. There have been numerous proposals made with respect to the treatment of the relationship between constructions in which verbal predicates and their nominalized counterparts occur. The following issues need to be further explored in this area. What is the broader typological context in which to investigate English and Hungarian nominalization? Given the latest developments in various generative frameworks (the Minimalist Program, Lexical-Functional Grammar, etc.), which component of grammar is best suited for capturing the relevant phenomena? What are the indispensable aspects of the model to be developed in any particular framework for analyzing the similarities and differences between English and Hungarian from the above-mentioned broader typological perspective? Ideally, the research should be partially based on corpus linguistic inquiry, and the findings should be tested by the computational implementation of the relevant part of the model to be used or developed.
