The incidence of cancer and the mortality worldwide, including in our country, are increasing every year. In addition to demographic changes, the development of exposure to risk factors according to several research also plays a role in the growth. At a rough estimate, approximately 40% of cancer cases could be prevented if the risk factors and protective factors were known by the members of the affected population and if they used the opportunities provided as primary prevention. Furthermore, through detection of premalignant conditions and early diagnosis of tumors secondary prevention can reduce not only medical costs, but also the occurrence of most significant physical, social and psychological co-morbidities associated with cancer treatment. Preventing the recurrence of cancer and the formation of metastases, namely tertiary prevention, further increases the possibility of disease-free survival among patients.
In the course of our work, we shed light on the possibilities inherent in the preventive measures available in our country, by exploring the knowledge and attitudes among the members of the population exposed to risk.
Mapping the effectiveness of specific strategies for certain types of tumors (skin, breast, cervical, colorectal and head and neck cancers) - including vaccination, nutrition and other lifestyle advice, access to screening tests - and the development of related knowledge and health awareness can be a milestone to further reducing the number of cancer cases and mortality in Hungary.
