Serious nosocomial infections after polytrauma cause substantial health care burden. Measuring leukocyte function changes (adhesion, respiratory burst, deformability) can be helpful in early diagnosis of infection. Our research team investigate alterations of neutrophil leukocyte specific gravity compared to that of plasma at the onset of the nosocomial infections. Leukocyte anti-sedimentation rate (LAR) is determined by measuring neutrophil concentration in the upper (U) and lower (L) half of blood column after one-hour gravity sedimentation of sodium citrate anticoagulated whole blood sample. Equation of LAR = 100 (U - L)/(U + L) is used to calculate the number of cells that crosses the half-line of the blood sample in the sedimentation tube during the one-hour sedimentation. Our previous studies have indicated that LAR increases significantly in the early phase of nosocomial infection, and upward floating, “light” neutrophil leukocytes are smaller in size, and charged with less granules than “heavy” ones.
