Description of the research topic:

Healthcare is one of the most complex and costly sectors worldwide. Diagnostic challenges lead to potential inequalities in care, reduced efficiency, and increased costs. Professional protocols and guidelines aim to assist healthcare professionals in patient care and support the sustainability of healthcare systems. The development and refinement of these protocols, metrics, and the implementation of responses to ongoing challenges require the exploration of common sources of errors.
Our research aims to uncover the challenges and difficulties in current healthcare processes, providing an evidence-based foundation for education and training, systemic improvements, and future decision-support solutions. This study serves as a basis for future developments and their successful implementation by understanding the current challenges in diagnostic work from the perspectives of clinical and primary care decision-makers. We will conduct extensive survey data collection, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions regarding the interpretation of laboratory results and the determination of further investigation directions. Data mining methods will be used to examine patterns and trends in laboratory test orders.
At the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen (DE KK), more than 3 million doctor-patient encounters and over 4 million laboratory tests are conducted annually, covering primary, emergency, and all major specialized examinations. The sizeable database and the easily accessible pool of ó healthcare provider specialists involved in diagnostics make DE KK an excellent location for conducting this research.
It is important to emphasize that supporting clinical decision-making for healthcare providers improves the quality of individual patient care and promotes equitable access to healthcare by reducing unnecessary test requests and associated costs.
