Description of the research topic:

Ultrashort-pulse illumination of solids and surfaces enabled the investigation of several recently discovered phenomena. These include the transient metalization of dielectrics lasting only the duration of the laser pulse, the behavior of transient electron populations (so-called hot electrons) in metals and their application in surface integrated optical components for ultrafast signal processing. In case of metals, surface photoemission can also take place at suitable laser intensities which can be ideally used for the diagnostics of nanooptical near-fields. The task of the Ph. D. candidate is the develop new experimental methods for studying the mechanisms of ultrafast electron excitations in metals and investigations of various excitation processes in dielectrics, metals and heterostructured media. With these, ultrafast switching of optical signals in surface integrated structures will also be possible during the Ph. D. period.
