Description of the research topic:

The increasing share of variable renewable energy sources (VREs) in the global energy mix poses increasing challenges for transmission system operators (TSOs). Energy storage and energy conversion are able to provide an adequate response to the challenge posed by solar (the primary VRE source in Hungary) and wind energy in the European Union. Hydrogen, due to its beneficial properties, may be suitable for: 1.) participation in the downward regulation of electric energy 2.) upward regulation after storage and reconversion 3.) admixture to natural gas 4.) producing synthetic methane for feeding into the natural gas grid following a methanation process.
In the course of the research, we look for the role of hydrogen in system regulation, primarily based on the regulatory need of the Hungarian electricity system, and we examine the potentials for cooperation between electricity and natural gas systems.
