Description of the research topic:

The development of accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) designs is currently underway in several countries. Candidate materials must undergo testing under various conditions to assess their suitability for nuclear reactor environments. The primary objective of these developments is to achieve fuel designs with less degradation than the zirconium alloys currently in use under accident conditions. It is imperative to demonstrate that these new designs also perform effectively under normal operating conditions.
The HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research (HUN-REN EK) receives various cladding materials for accident-tolerant fuel designs from international partners. HUN-REN EK experts conduct high-temperature thermal and chemical treatments on these samples. Mechanical properties and potential failure mechanisms are thoroughly investigated. The microstructure of the samples is examined using various techniques (e.g., LOM, SEM, EDX) to characterize any potential changes in the material. Numerical simulation is employed to evaluate the measurements obtained.
The applicant is expected to actively participate in experimental work, encompassing the design, execution, and evaluation of tests, including numerical modeling. Additionally, the applicant will be responsible for examining samples and contributing to the development of numerical models to simulate the behavior of accident-tolerant fuel (ATF). As these activities are conducted in international collaborations, the applicant should engage proactively in these projects.
