Description of the research topic:

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance is rendering a growing number of antibiotics ineffective, which can complicate the treatment of diseases of various bacterial origins. This problem may necessitate the use of alternative therapies, among which the potential use of bacteriophages stands out. Phage therapy is expected to become increasingly important and may help to reduce the use of conventional antibiotics. One of the prerequisites for their use is precise knowledge of the bacteriophage to be used. Third-generation sequencing enables the efficient sequencing of a large number of environmental samples and thus the discovery and characterization of phages. Nevertheless, only a few bioinformatic tools are currently available for the detailed characterization of phages, and some of them focus only on small groups. The student will evaluate the utility and limitations of currently available tools in light of advances in sequencing technology and develop and optimize bioinformatic algorithms to gain insights into the world of bacteriophages through multi-layered data analysis. The objectives also include integrating the bacteriophage genomes discovered during the training into a searchable database
