Description of the research topic:

The market value of a fruit cultivar has been determined by many factors, however, large fruit size is an important aim in all breeding programs. Other fruit characters such as flesh firmness, or cracking susceptibilty in case of sweet cherry are also highlighted.
However, the number of genetic markers that can be utilized in practical breeding programs are rare, there are lack of information on their correlation with phenotype as they had been developed on a limited population.
In this PhD work we will focus on fruit morphological as well as molecular characterization of selected fruit cultivars / genebank accessions in order to gain information on the utilization of those molecular markers in practice. Fruit size will be evaluated especially in peach and almond accessions, while fruit firmness and cracking susceptibility will be tested mainly on sweet cherries.
