Description of the research topic:

Microplastic, a ubiquitous and concerning environmental pollutant, have gained increasing attention due to their potential impacts on human health. These minuscule plastic particles, typically measuring less than 5 millimeters in size, originate from the fragmentation of larger plastic items or are intentionally manufactured at microscopic scales. Microplastics can be found in various environmental compartments, including oceans, freshwater bodies, soil, air, and even in the food we consume. Pathways of human exposure include ingestion via contaminated food and water sources - primarily seafood, bottled water - and inhalation of air-borne particles. Microplastics absorb harmful chemicals leading to toxic effects when ingested or inhaled.

There are no studies or research on awareness of microplastics in Jordan. Significant challenges exist, including efforts to raise public awareness and gaps in effective waste management practices.

Research objectives:

Evaluate the existing knowledge and awareness levels regarding microplastics among the general public in Jordan.

Explore the attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions of the public regarding the impact of microplastics on the environment and human health.

Identify specific areas where the public has inaccurate information or misconceptions about microplastics, which will facilitate the development of targeted educational interventions.
