Description of the research topic:

A better understanding of the soil aggregates is of key importance, as these have a basic influence on the water management and fertility of the soil. Previously the soil processes were described purely by physical and chemical parameters. However, the understanding of these processes is not possible without soil biology. During the last years, it became evident that the soil conditions can only be improved with the soil life being considered. Conservation tillage and the use of green cover crops

are stimulating soil life, and thus it contributes to the development of a good soil structure. There are data available on the physical and chemical soil properties and also on the glomalin, which is a by-product of the mycorrhiza fungi, attracted by the cover crops. However, studies compiling and synthesizing these datasets are rare. The investigation of soil aggregates is the field where this kind of data integration is necessary. Different types of binding agents, among them the glomalin, play an outstanding role in the formation of soil aggregates. Nevertheless, our knowledge about the nature and way it takes effect during the aggregate formation and carbon storage is very limited, especially in the Central European region. Basic research on aggregates is a key issue, as aggregates have a fundamental influence on soils' water management and fertility. By developing good soil structure, runoff from increasingly frequent intense rainfall events can be captured at source. This will increase crop safety and reduce the damage caused by soil degradation and flash floods.
