Description of the research topic:
In poultry production, the most serious ectoparasite causing economic damage is the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae). Besides, the darkling beetle (Alphitobius diaperinus) is of animal health importance among the pests that live in the close vicinity of the animals. Both can play a role in the spread of various pathogens and their zoonotic role is not negligible. The aim of this PhD research is to investigate the vector role of the red mite and the darkling beetle in poultry production. The work will use traditional molecular biology methods as well as new generation sequencing to investigate the presence of poultry pathogenic viruses, bacteria and protozoans in the ectoparasites. In addition, a comparison of poultry husbandry practices from an animal health point of view will also be an important part of the planned research. The expected results are primarily of scientific relevance, however, they are also of indirect use to practitioners and veterinarians involved in poultry production
