Description of the research topic:

The Holocaust is a historical event that condenses questions of the nature of historical consciousness, the possibility of remembrance, the experience of the impossibility to mediate, and the necessity of forgetting. The aesthetic experience of the dehumanisation of man, the raging of violence, mass murders (works by Tadeusz Borowski, Varlaam Salamov, Martin Amis, Art Spiegelmann, etc.) is closely linked to the confrontation with the limits of understanding. Imre Kertész, a world-renowned figure in the Holocaust discourse, who has devoted virtually all his work to the preservation of memory, wrote: “we may form a realistic view of the Holocaust, this incomprehensible and confusing reality, only with the help of our aesthetic imagination.” The various representations of dehumanisation and violence in literature and film could be the subject of a doctoral dissertation on this topic.
