Among the changes affecting business life in recent decades, one of the most significant is the explosive appreciation of the role of the natural environment in business thinking and management. This process is closely aligned with the general reassessment of the role of natural factors, as well as the development and spread of the concept of sustainable development. As part of this, views on the role of business and the position of the economy within society have changed. The previous, generally accepted, predominantly economic goals have been modified, and social expectations have also been transformed as a result of the change in values. The growing need to maintain and improve the quality of the environment encourages, but even more forces, companies to reveal the environmental effects of their operations, to eliminate the polluting effects of their activities and to prevent similar ones from occurring in the future. The strategic importance of environmental factors and the increasing cost sensitivity in the field of environmental protection make goal-oriented management and control of environmental resources inevitable.
The emergence of digitization affects all actors in the economy, regardless of industry and company size. It influences the behavior of consumers and the operating processes of businesses and public organizations. In connection with this, the role of data and information as valuable tools is enhanced. Nowadays, it has clearly become a production factor. Therefore, the management of it also plays a prominent role. Data asset management and the IT solutions that support it are no longer only responsible for collecting and presenting data, but also for exploiting all the possibilities inherent in it. Data has become a kind of new special "raw material" that can greatly improve the efficiency of businesses and can form the basis of a new kind of data-driven business. The quality and possibilities of controlling work, including planning, plan control, management information provision, decision preparation and performance measurement, have been determined by the quantity, completeness and quality of the available data. The data asset management and IT innovations that have taken place in recent years, as well as the development of Data Warehouse and Big Data systems and data exploitation solutions based on them, have opened up new opportunities for controlling work.
