Description of the research topic:
Physical activity promotes health and sedentariness promotes disease. Reversing the documented evolution of sedentary behavior and physical inactivity is especially important during university years. After university, by mid-life, only 20-30% of the European population meet WHO physical activity recommendations. However, the prevalence of sedentariness can reach a rate as high as 50-60% among university students. The university period is thus the ‘last minute’ to lay the foundation of positive health-related behaviors that support well-being into adulthood. Depression, loneliness, high levels of stress, mental health issues, exhaustion, physical deconditioning, weight gain, presence of risk behaviors, such as alcohol consumption and use of recreational drugs are all too frequent occurrences among university students. The aim of the project is to assess university students’ physical activity, well-being and health and advise those in need on how they can improve their quality of life.
