Description of the research topic:
The health sciences and other disciplines related to health promotion, such as social sciences or systems science, have undergone major developments in recent decades. (Rutter et al., 2017) As a consequence, new elements in the theory and practice of health promotion have been emphasized or have come to the fore again.
A new element is the increasing prevalence of systems thinking, both in theoretical approaches and in systems approaches such as network analysis or impact analysis based on dynamic systems modeling. (Davahli, Karwowski, & Taiar, 2020)
Partnership, a fundamental element of the Ottawa Charter, has been relegated to the background over the past three decades, mostly at the level of declarations, but has recently come to the fore again concerning the implementation of health promotion programs (in WHO terminology, a coalition of partners; CoP). (Vitra et al., 2020)
The proposed research topic focuses on the developments in public health and health promotion in the 21st century, and its main question is to investigate what changes in the theory and practice of health promotion are needed to make healthy lifestyles more successfully diffused in the population than at present and to make the living and working environment increasingly health-promoting.
In the first phase of the research, students will deepen their knowledge on the complex determinants of health (evolution of health models, complex health model), social embeddedness (health culture, health inequalities), behavior change (COM-B model, nudging and insight), complex interventions (complex social problems, participation, complex programs, health planning), and evaluation of health promotion programs (implementation-oriented, evaluation of complex interventions, realistic evaluation).
After the preparatory phase, students will choose a research sub-theme that matches their interests and implement it as a case study. This will help them to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of modern health promotion at a skill level and to apply it in practice in the future.
