Description of the research topic:
Communication plays a key role both in the life of animals and in the organization of human societies. The success of communication very much depends on the honesty of the messages, yet such honesty is not guaranteed. Conflict of interest between communicating parties can lead to dishonest communication both among animals and humans. Dishonesty can have severe consequences such as mistrust, lack of efficiency, or in extreme cases, the collapse of the communication or reputation system. It follows that the origin and maintenance of honest communication is a pressing issue in both natural and social sciences. We will use a wide range of methods to investigate this question including game theory, replicator dynamics and individual-based modelling.
