Description of the research topic:
The left periphery of the clause is the domain where operators are interpreted. The surface position of certain constituents carrying operator features reflects where they are actually interpreted, in other cases interpretation is the result of covert movement to the Logical form depending on the language or the construction in question. In discourse configurational languages topic and focus constituents appear in designates positions, while structure configurational languages use more marked constructions to express these features. Certain languages, Hungarian being one of them, can encode scope in the linear order. The interaction of scope and information structure results in further restrictions on word order, also subject to cross-linguistic variation. Identifying and explaining the conditions at work is one of the central questions of generative grammar.
