Description of the research topic:

Soil microbial communities represent the greatest reservoir of biological diversity known in the world, with thousands to tens of thousands of microbial species found a single gram of soil. The MTA-EKE Lendület Environmental Microbiome Research Group study the spatial and temporal dynamics in the composition and functionality of soil and plant microbiomes associated with grapevine (Vitis vinifera) and surrounding semi-natural habitats, with particular attention to the pathobiome, pathogen-suppressing microorganisms, and disease incidence and severity. Recent studies on "suppressive soils" have emphasized the links between biologically impoverished soils and higher pathogen load as well as the potential of biologically diverse soil communities to suppress pathogens via resource competition or antagonism. This research project will focus on the taxonomic and functional characterization of microorganisms from healthy and diseased grapevine tissues and the influence of soil microbiome on their composition.
