Description of the research topic:

A new technology developed by us to prepare homogeneous nanosize metal-loaded spherical carbons with low hydrodynamical resistance by pyrolysis of metal-loaded ion-exchangers with various functional groups opened new perspectives for using these materials as catalysts and chemosorbents. Using iron and cobalt as metal-ion during loading various ion-exchangers, the carbons containing nanosize iron and cobalt or their oxides were proved to be magnetic. It means they separatability with a magnet instead of filtering, fluidizability by a pulsating electromagnet instead of gas-fluidization or stirring without stirring bars by a magnetic stirrer are perspective viewpoints of their use in the research and industry. The surface iron and cobalt grains can be exchanged with noble metals like platinum, gold or palladium, and magnetizable noble metal or bimetal catalysts can be prepared.
The main goal of the research is preparation and studying the new metal (metal-compounds) spherical carbon supports, studies on their chemical and surface properties, from various ion-exchangers and with various metals, preparation of magnetic noble metal and bimetallic catalysts and chemosorbents, testing these materials ion various catalytic or sorption reactions, e.g. in mercury removal from waters.
Almost all the analytical potential of our institute, including spectroscopies, thermal analysis, surface studying methods, e.g., ICP, TG-MS, TG-IR, DSC, XRD, XPS, Mössbauer, IR, Raman, NMR, GC, HPLC, SEM, TEM and other methods will be learned and used by the candidate.
