Description of the research topic:
Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of focal epilepsies, and based on earlier data, more than 70% of the patients have hippocampal sclerosis (HS). Frequently, HS is preceded by childhood complex febrile seizure (FS). Our aim is to investigate the structural and functional changes caused by FS and NSAIDs used for the fever reduction. Our examinations will be performed on animal models of FS, on organotypic hippocampal and neocortical slice and cell culture. In addition to the experiments, surgically removed cortical tissue of TLE patients with HS and with a history of FS will be examined. Those results obtained in experiments will be tested in the surgical tissue of the patients.
