Description of the research topic:

A self-reflexive and medium-critical approach to contemporary painting can be achieved through a shift in perspective. Taking on new and different perspectives is always useful for whatever area we want to study. Painting explores the discursive field of the medium-reflexive, i.e., the discursive mechanisms between the visual spectacle and its reception, beyond the aestheticising tones of technical harmonies and disharmonies that reveal personal, self-reflexive narratives. This means nothing less than a contemporary revision of representation and display in the context of the pictorial turn and a critical rethinking of perception in the light of current technical/digital aesthetic influences.

Our proposed research topics delve into the unexplored realms of contemporary aesthetics and painting. We aim to uncover the possibilities of painting after the transformative 'pictorial turn', the unique characteristics of self- and medium-reflexive artistic practices, the intriguing pictorial problematics of representation and display, the aesthetic aspects of emptiness and absence, the dynamic performativity in and on the pictorial space, and the dual nature of painting as both image and pictorial object. These topics promise to open new doors of understanding and appreciation in the field of contemporary art.

Our research topic necessitates a unique approach where autonomous, self-reflexive artistic practice and theoretical research run in parallel, mutually enriching each other.

Don't hesitate to contact the doctoral advisor for further details concerning the topic.
