Description of the research topic:

Different electrolyzer technologies gain continuously increasing industrial attention in recent years. This is rooted in the possibility of using these methods for charge storage, by using the momentarily available excess electricity to form high energy density chemicals. Two specific examples are water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction. During these processes valuable products form on the cathode, while the anodic reaction is typically the oxidation of water, a reaction that results in a low value product and in a high cell voltage. During this project we will study alternative anode reactions that can be coupled with the above mentioned cathode processes. The investigated reactions will include the partial oxidation of different industrial side-products (e.g., glycerol) and various hydrocarbons.
