Description of the research topic:

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a fatal neurodegenerative disease which is characterized by the loss of lower and upper motor neurons. Symptoms usually begin around the age of 50 and the progression of the disease leads to the atrophy of more and more muscle groups. A tenth of the cases show a positive family history while 90% remain sporadic.
In 1993 the first gene was identified in the background of ALS which is superoxide dismutase 1. Since then more than 120 genes have been associated with the disease. Our work focuses on the genetic background of the disease by examining the Hungarian ALS patients. During our experiments classic molecular biological methods, next generation sequencing and bioinformatic assessment tools are used.
