Description of the research topic:

Analysis of the value-based distinction between mass (or popular) art and high art (Novitz, Carroll, Cohen, etc.). The advantages and disadvantages of these three options: (i) aesthetic merit of artworks is reduceable to cognitive merit, (ii) cognitive value is a constitutive part of aesthetic value (Kieran, Lopes), and (iii) these two kinds of value should be identified with each other (Goodman, Young). What is the source of the cognitive value of artworks? What kind of knowledge is conveyed by artworks? (Various options: knowledge of the nature of our moral concepts (John), insights into human nature (Novitz), knowledge about moral values (Beardsmore, Novitz, Eldridge, Sharpe, Kieran), knowledge of possibilities (Putnam), knowledge about the significance of events in our lives (Beardsmore), phenomenal knowledge (Walsh), practical knowledge—know how (Robinson, Putnam, Currie, Kieran, Lopes).)
