Description of the research topic:
Nearly all soil strentgth and stiffness testing is performed as static (single load direction) or uniform cyclic loading. Previous research at SZE research group has focused primarily on uniform cyclic loading by Torsional Shear Test (TOSS) and Resonant Column (RC). However, preliminary tests have also been performed on the TOSS device where the input loading is irregular in nature.
The objective of this research is to perform TOSS tests using irregular loading patterns and apply various material models to predict soil response. Additional RC testing will be used to verify certain aspects of soil properties and will also be applied using innovative methods. Expected results will help to verify (or contradict) presently accepted, but not often tested, prediction models.
