Description of the research topic:
Using a combination of clinical observations, classical microbiology, molecular fingerprinting, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics the complex microbial communities present in healthy and disbiotic oral cavities are characterized. The composition of the microbial communities will be determined at highest possible resolution and the main metabolic pathways prevailing in those communities will be uncovered. Effects of various environmental factors and host behavior will be studied, e.g. halitosis, smoking and/or drinking habit, diet, periodontitis, peri-implantitis, in order to facilitate the development of appropriate therapy.
