Description of the research topic:
Even healthy older compared with younger individuals walk with 20% higher energy cost (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21345892/ ; https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36693530/ ). It is currently unknown what causes this age-specific increase in cost of transport. Age seems to change the neural control of gait. Older compared with younger adults walk with substantially higher muscle coactivation. Exercise interventions tend to decrease msucle coactivation. RT with eccentrically biased contractions tend to reduce tendon stiffness. The purpose of this project is to determine the effects RT variants on muscle coactivation and tendon stiffness and see if these changes are associated with reductions in cost of transport.
