The following themes/authors/theories illustrate possible starting points for a dissertation on this topic: Frege’s theory of meaning and reference, Kripke’s objections; Russell’s theory about proper names and definite desriptions; Strawson’s theory about definite descriptions; Kripke’s proposals about proper names; post-Kripkean theories of proper names (for example, direct reference theory, neo-Fregean theories); Kripke and Putnam about the semantics of natural kind terms (for example, “water” and “wombat”); Kaplan’s theory about the semantics of context-sensitive expressions (for example, “I”, “now”, “she”); the semantics of quantified expressions (for example, “every wombat”, “two wombats”); propositions; presuppositions; anaphora; compositionality; propositional attitude contexts (for example, “Ferenc Liszt believes that …”); intensional and hyperintensional contexts; proper names without bearers; identity statements.
