Description of the research topic:
The photocatalytic water treatment process based on sunlight is among the viable alternatives to remove organic pollutants from wastewater. The efficiency of these nanomaterials is strongly dependent from the structure and morphology of the nanocrystals. Mixed oxides, such as BaTiO3, CuWO4, or other simple compounds including Cu2S or Cu2O are now offering new possibilities to the classical photocatalysts (TiO2, WO3, ZnO) both considering the available structure and morphology tuning possibilities and surface properties as well. The obtained photocatalytic activity can be further enhanced by depositing different noble metal nanoparticles (e.g. Pt or Pd) on the surface of these nanostructures. The newly developped materials will offer enhanced activity in the degradation of organic pollutants, including pesticides, hormones, dyes and pharmaceutical residue molecules.
