Description of the research topic:
Atmospheric aerosol particles play an important role in the atmosphere: the particles have a strong influence on the radiative transfer of the Earth’s atmosphere directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation and indirectly through cloud formation. In addition to climatic effects the aerosol particles determines visibility, and have a significant impact on human health. All these effects depend on the size, shape and chemical composition of aerosol particles. Despite its importance our knowledge on the chemical composition of aerosol particles is insufficient. It is particularly true for the organic fraction which comprises of hundreds or thousands of compounds. In this project the water-soluble fraction of atmospheric aerosol collected in different environments will be studied with a special focus on very hydrophilic compounds.
The task of the applicant is to collect atmospheric aerosol samples from different sources, isolate and characterize very hydrophilic compounds by applying chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques as well as mass spectrometry.
