Description of the research topic:
It is possible to join to a currently running research project. The aims of the research are: (1) to quantify river incision rates, (2) to constrain the timing of terrace formation, (3) to compare fluvial terrace formation mechanisms in catchments under different tectonic and climatic controls, and (4) to determine the catchment scale change of quartz and feldspar luminescence parameters in order to better understand fluvial dynamics and sedimentary processes.
Fluvial terrace formation can be induced by both tectonic and climatic processes and can also be affected by lithological and geomorphic forces. This study not only extends terrace chronology in the Central Pamir, but most importantly, fills in a large data gap in the Western Tian Shan where no incision rate has been measured yet. To achieve the above objectives, we will use luminescence dating and conduct geomorphological mapping.
