Description of the research topic:
3D Scar mapping is a new diagnostic tool to study patients after catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation. High resolution MRI contrast aided scar cardiac MRI mapping is capable to differentiate scar and healthy tissue even in thin (2 mm) cardiac muscle.
Both radiofrequency and cryoablation are used to cure patients suffering atrial fibrillation. The aim of these treatments is to create circular elecric isolation, and thus transmural myocardial leasions in the pulmonary vein ostia. The procedure is called pulmonary vein isolation PVI . The success rate of ablation can be judged using this scar mapping technique.
