Description of the research topic:
One of the most exciting areas of Asian Christianity is the emergence of Korean Christianity, which has become the largest religion in South Korea. This situation is unique on the map of religious of the Far East, since Christianity managed to recruit a very small minority of religious converts for centuries in most of the Asian countries. However, Christianity appeared alongside Shamanism, Buddhism and Confucianism in Korea with great success and Protestantism became the most powerful of religion which has an extraordinary impact on current Korean society. PhD candidates will research what kind of historical, social, political and religious elements and factors contributed to the unique success of Christianity, especially that of Protestantism in South Korea.
