Description of the research topic:
Detrimental health effects of air pollution are a major issue and the related research is a hot topic. Elemental composition, concentration, density and aerosol size distribution are major determinants of the related health effects, thus their knowledge is a pre-requisite of the characterisation of health consequences and assessment of the associated health risks. Characterization of airway transport and deposition distribution of the inhaled aerosols is also of key importance in the determination of adverse health effects. Finally, research efforts oriented towards the elucidation of key biophysical and biological mechanisms driving the pathogenesis of disorders of different organs (e.g. lungs, brain) in association with the inhalation of air pollutants are highly needed. Every link of the above chain of research is important for us, thus the task of the PhD student is to perform high quality research in any/some of them and publish the results in highly ranked journals. Advanced level knowledge of English language is a requirement.
