Description of the research topic:
Cave environments are unique from several aspects. Lack of light, very limited food resources and the simplicity of communities are their main features. Further, this special environment is typically very stable, between-year variation is negligible and within-year variation is also low. There are surface-dwelling species that can successfully colonize caves, and some primarily cave-adapted species can also colonize surface environments. The aim of the research is to understand evolution in caves by comparing surface-cave species or population pairs. We will not solely focus on trait states, but will also consider trait variation. There is possibility to study behavioural, neural, morphological, physiological and life-history traits. Both field and labwork is included.
