Intervention using a nurse-sow system is an acceptable productivity tool whose impacts have not been fully understood. Nurse sows wean an additional litter after weaning their own litter. In this case, the nurse sow remains in lactation for up to 42 days. The impacts of extended lactation on nurse sow’s future reproductive performance are unknown. It is hypothesized that nurse sows would have a decreased CR and FR, and by extension decreased litter size in the subsequent farrowing compared to non-nurse sows. It''s vital to understand the impacts of extended lactation length so as to adequately and appropriately inform swine producers regarding nurse sow management system.
